It's safe to say that Anni Roenkae's imagery isn't quite like anything else on Pexels. The Finnish artist creates captivating visuals using painting, illustration, and digital manipulation alongside photography.
Based in Oulu, Finland, Anni specializes in abstract and surreal art, and loves experimenting with different techniques. We spoke to Anni about the inspirations behind her work.
Anni: When I was sixteen years old, a friend of mine lent me his Fujifilm digital camera. I fell in love with that camera and I bought it for myself. That's how I got interested in photography.
I'm using pretty basic gear: Panasonic Lumix GH4, Canon Powershot SX70HS, and my phone Samsung A71. I use many different filters, prisms, and lights when I'm taking photos.
I love creative photography in general because it offers unlimited possibilities to express myself.
Music inspires me the most — especially experimental music, it fills my mind with colors and images.
My dreams have always been extremely detailed and vivid, and I find them very inspiring.
Poetry, science fiction stories, comics, and films are a great source of inspiration too.
I often like to explore the idea of a shattered beauty. We are all broken, that's how the light gets in.
I love the photography of Neil Krug, Spencer Tunick, Erwin Blumenfeld, and Ansel Adams.
Some other artists who inspire me are H. R. Giger, Salvador Dali, Zao Wou-Ki, and David Lynch.
